Interesting read, Julian. I'd probably take a stronger line on boardroom pay but I agree about the weirdness of looking only at absolute pre-tax profit. A fair analysis has to take in margins (and ROCE), tax, customer choice and competition. A couple of years ago it was Ed Davey making the running in the "eye-watering profits" stakes.
